Mike Savage, CA is a partner in Ernst & Young's Toronto office, where he leads the fraud investigation and dispute services (FIDS) practice. He has experience in fraud detection, fraud prevention programs, whistleblower hotlines, fraud risk assessments, benchmarking exercises, forensic accounting investigations, litigation support and dispute resolution. He co-developed the Ernst & Young Global methodology for Anti-Fraud Programs. He is also experienced in the design, construction and interrogation of transaction and document databases. He has provided expert testimony at formal proceedings, including disciplinary hearings, arbitrations and criminal courts. He has spoken publicly on a number of occasions on subjects related to forensic accounting issues as well as fraud prevention and detection matters.

Monique Deguire, CA, CPA, is Director of Internal Audit for Centerra Gold Inc., a growth-oriented Canadian based gold mining company and the largest Western-based producer in Central Asia and the former Soviet Union. She has over twenty-seven years of experience in internal audit, external audit and financial management. She previously led the internal audit functions of Sears Canada, SMK Speedy International and Guardian Insurance. In addition to having responsibility for detailed audits across North America and Europe, she has selected and implemented various audit tools and methodologies, designed and presented training courses, started up an internal audit function in Europe and led a successful project in France to manage the inventory of over 300 retail units.

 


Peter Dent
Deloitte & Touche LLP

 

Peter Dent is a Partner in the Financial Advisory group in the Toronto office of Deloitte, and focuses in the area of Forensic & Dispute Services. He has delivered numerous training sessions and seminars on the topics of fraud and corruption to numerous organizations across Canada and internationally. Between 2000 and 2004, he was the Senior Forensic Accountant and Team Leader of the Forensic Services Unit of the Department of Institutional Integrity of the World Bank Group in Washington, D.C. His areas of responsibility included managing large fraud and corruption investigations internationally, the development and implementation of a corruption and fraud audit methodology, a fraud and corruption risk-based approach to data-mining and the design and implementation of an investigative information management system.

 


Robert Ferguson, CA, CFA

Robert Ferguson is a Partner in Ernst & Young's Fraud Investigation & Dispute Services practice. Since 1989, Bob has specialized exclusively in forensic accounting, corporate investigations and economic loss calculations. Bob has extensive experience conducting and managing engagements for governments, major international corporations, law firms, financial institutions, public utilities, commercial real estate companies, insurance brokerage, lumber, steel fabrication, and distributors. He has worked for clients in a broad range of industries including banking and investment, pharmaceutical, automotive, oil and gas, and electricity. His casework includes international investigations, with work performed in Canada, the U.S. and Europe.

The primary focus of Bob's practice is intellectual property disputes and litigation support. On IP litigation support engagements, he has represented both plaintiffs and defendants and has particular expertise with pharmaceutical companies. These assignments have included quantifying damages, accounting of profits, and damages claims under Section 8 of the Patented Medicine Regulations, which concerns companies seeking compensation for improper exclusion from a market. Bob has also handled a wide range of litigation support matters, including breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty, shareholder disputes, loss of income, debt recovery and professional negligence.

Bob's corporate investigation experience includes management fraud, employee fraud, asset searches, asset tracing, breach of fiduciary duty and partnership disputes. He has given presentations on fraud prevention and detection to lawyers, accountants and law enforcement agencies. He has been published on numerous occasions and has been recognized as an expert witness in Both Canada and the United States.

 


Jennifer Fiddian-Green
Grant Thornton LLP

 

Jennifer Fiddian-Green is a Partner in the Forensic Accounting and Investigative Services group at Grant Thornton LLP. She is a CICA qualified investigative and forensic accountant and is an anti-money laundering ("AML") specialist. As well, she is a Certified Fraud Examiner ("CFE") and a Certified Forensic Investigator ("CFI"). She has investigated, reported and managed numerous fraud investigations involving both civil and criminal allegations for public and private companies and government organizations. She has provided expert witness testimony. She also works with clients to understand fraud and money laundering risks and to implement strategies to prevent and detect fraud and to comply with government legislation.

 


Jeffrey Goodman

Jeffrey Goodman is a Partner with Heenan Blaikie LLP in Toronto and practises employment, labour law and human rights law. He represents employers before various Courts and administrative tribunals. He speaks frequently on employment, human rights and labour-related matters. He is the co-author of a book published by Canada Law Book entitled "A Guide to Alternative Work Relationships". He has also authored numerous papers and articles and is frequently quoted in the press and by the Ontario Courts. He also appears regularly on Report On Business.

 


David Malamed

David Malamed is an experienced Forensic Senior Manager in the Forensic Accounting and Investigative Services group at Grant Thornton LLP. David has completed his Diploma in Investigative Forensic Accounting and is a Certified Forensic Examiner. David, a Chartered Accountant and a Certified Public Accountant has experience investigating assignments that have crossed over both the Canadian and US borders for both public and private companies. David is responsible for the design of "DART" Methodology a database analysis investigative tool and process. As part of his work, he has concentrated on incorporating technological tools onto all of his forensic and fraud investigations. His experience has included assisting a key Canadian telecommunications company, a major public newspaper, media and entertainment business and the Toronto Police Services on a number of cases.

 

R. Bruce Smith
Gowlings LLP

 

A Partner at Gowlings LLP, R. Bruce Smith practises in a broad range of commercial litigation and dispute resolution matters, with emphasis on financial institutions, fraud and corporate remedies. He currently serves as the National Chair of the Banking Litigation Group and the Civil Fraud Team. Throughout his career, Bruce has acted as lead counsel for many Canadian chartered banks and trust companies on a wide variety of plaintiff's remedies, lender liability issues, and insolvency/reorganization matters. Bruce recently acted for 12 financial institutions to freeze assets and achieved a large net recovery on a multi-million dollar fraud loss. He also organized the Toronto legal team that represented a major creditor in the Canada 3000 insolvency.

 
David Stewart

Mr. Stewart is a Partner in the Forensic & Dispute Services practice of Deloitte & Touche LLP in Toronto, and he is a leader of Deloitte's Analytic Forensic Technology practice in Canada. Mr. Stewart specializes in forensic investigations, computer forensic services, forensic accounting reviews and is experienced in conducting investigative interviews. Mr. Stewart assists clients identify fraud, waste and abuse through the implementation of high-tech investigative analytical technology and methodologies.

Mr. Stewart has conducted multiple complex fraud investigations and managed engagement teams to identify; intellectual property theft, prime bank instrument fraud, secret commissions kickbacks & bribery, conflict of interest concerns, identity theft, asset misappropriation schemes and management fraud. He is an experienced speaker and provides training of fraud risk assessments, forensic investigative techniques and fraud detection to corporate and professional organizations.

Before joining Deloitte, Mr. Stewart worked in private industry in the United Kingdom, as an internal auditor for Shell U.K. Exploration & Production where he conducted value for money, contract and operational audits on upstream and downstream facilities. He has several years' experience in healthcare where he monitored the financial performance of hospital and healthcare facilities that included; reviewing large capital expenditure business cases and achievement of strategic goals.

Mr. Stewart has industry sector experience that includes; financial services, technology, insurance, oil & gas, construction, aboriginal, transportation, automotive, franchise chains, restaurants, hospitality, manufacturing, telecommunications, distribution and government.

 


John Sypnowich
Emergis Inc.

 

John Sypnowich is Vice President and General Counsel at Emergis Inc. Prior to joining Emergis Inc., He occupied a number of legal positions within the BCE Group, most recently as Assistant General Counsel, Bell Canada. Prior to joining the BCE Group, he was in private practice in Montreal. A member of the Quebec Bar, he has considerable experience in the corporate, commercial and information technology fields. Emergis is an IT leader in Canada that focuses on the health and financial services sectors. It develops and manages solutions that automate transactions and the exchange of information to increase the process efficiency and quality of service of its clients.

 

Allen E. Tait, CA, CFI
Ontario Ministry of Finance

Allen Tait, CA, CFI, is the Senior Audit Manager, Forensic Investigation Team, Ontario Internal Audit, Treasury Board Office, Ontario Ministry of Finance. He has been employed with the Provincial Government for 8 years. In this capacity, he is responsible for managing a staff of 6 investigators addressing civil and criminal allegations of financial fraud, breach of contract, protection of private information, conflict of interest and employee conduct. In addition to providing investigative services, the unit is active in fraud prevention by providing fraud control audits and risk assessments, fraud awareness training and consulting services for operational working groups developing fraud prevention control enhancements.

 
Ivan Zasarsky
Deloitte & Touche LLP

Mr. Zasarsky is a Senior Manager in the Forensic and Dispute Service group and leads the Forensic Data Analytics practice based in Toronto Canada. He specializes in providing technology based services for the mitigation of economic crime including fraud and money laundering.

Ivan has over 20 year of experience in the application of advanced technologies. This includes case tools, detection methodologies, algorithms and platform development. Ivan has worked with major clients in bringing forward innovation in challenging situations across several industries.

Prior to joining Deloitte, Ivan was instrumental in establishing bridgeheads for emerging technologies including, anti-money laundering. He participated in establishing anti-money laundering regimes in Europe and the Americas. This included the application of transaction monitoring and profiling technologies to the challenges of financial institutions meeting regulatory and statutory compliance in multiple jurisdictions.

He has toured and lectured on the application of technologies in the Americas and Europe, Middle-East and Africa regarding USA Patriot Act, Bank Secrecy Act and suppression of terrorism. Ivan was involved in several global analytics initiatives. Ivan holds a Master of Science degree in Economic Crime Management, and has published research in several areas of analytics.
