Joe Bornstein*

Joe Bornstein is a Senior Manager in KPMG Consulting's National Health Services Practice as well as co-leader of their health services in Ontario and Eastern Canada. Joe has over 20 years experience in consulting and research in healthcare in both Canada and the United States. He has dealt with the issue of privacy, as it is applied, at a very practical level with many different healthcare organizations. A strong focus of his consulting practice is in inter-organizational efforts to provide shared services. Joe has directed many large provincial and national reviews of health programs. He has also developed expertise in the use and application of healthcare information systems. He has developed clinical and evaluative information systems for community health centres, regional geriatric programs, home care systems as well as a variety of other programs.

Gilbert S. Sharpe
Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP

 

Gilbert S. Sharpe heads the Health Law Group at Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP. Gilbert is a veteran of healthcare legislation, having joined the Ministry of Health in 1975, and he has been involved in every major legal issue, as well as many major policy issues, involving healthcare since that time. Gilbert is Chief Health Law Consultant to the Ontario Ministry of Health, President of the Canadian Institute of Law and Medicine, and Editor-in-Chief of Health Law in Canada. Among his university faculty appointments, he is Chairman of Health Law Academic Studies, Faculty of Health Sciences, McMaster University.

Bala Kathiresan
Niagara Health System

 

Bala Kathiresan is the Chief Information Officer for the Niagara Health System, which provides a network of health services through eight hospitals with over 1,000 beds and serves a region of communities stretching from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. Bala is responsible for the information management portfolio that includes information technology/system, telecommunications, health records, patient registration/resources and health information research and analysis. Prior to joining the Niagara Health System, Bala was the Vice-President of Healthtech Inc. in Toronto.

Peter Lambert
St. Michael's Hospital

 

Peter Lambert is Manager of Information Security at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto. Drawing upon his healthcare management experience in information privacy and security, health records, patient registration and information technology, Peter is responsible for the development, implementation and support of the Hospital's information privacy and security program. He has also overseen implementation of a hospital-based EHR and the operation of a nationally recognized health information website. He has also served as Vice-Chair of the InfoHealth Alliance, Southeastern Ontario's regional healthcare information organization.

Bonnie J. Adamson, FCCHSE
Huron Perth Hospitals Partnership

 

Bonnie J. Adamson is President and Chief Executive Officer of the Huron Perth Hospitals Partnership, providing system-wide leadership to an integrated network of eight hospitals. Bonnie is the first CEO of this multi-site partnership hospital, and she previously acted as Vice-President of Patient Networks and Alliances at the London Health Sciences Centre, Patient Centred Care for Victoria Campus and Patient Services at the Victoria Hospital Corporation. In 2001, Bonnie was elected to a representative Director position for the province of Ontario for the Canadian College of Health Services Executives.

David A. Harris
KPMG Consulting LP

 

David A. Harris is a Manager in KPMG Consulting's Public Services Practice. With over 15 years of experience in design and implementation of clinical and administrative systems in ambulatory care clinics, David is a specialist in information technology in healthcare, well acquainted with issues of privacy, confidentiality and security of patient data. He brings a real-world perspective on the challenges that arise in a shared clinical environment. He has led numerous health information integration projects to present a complete clinical profile to caregivers and to support outcomes measurement.

Julie A. Thorburn

Julie A. Thorburn works in the Toronto offices of Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP. She has been instrumental in redefining entire areas of copyright law, an innovation and achievement that will benefit writers, composers and artists for years to come. At the same time, she also helps clients cope with rapidly evolving issues of privacy, trade secrets, copyright and Charter issues. Julie is a prolific writer and speaks frequently on these issues. Among her credits, she co-authored The Law of Confidential Business Information (Canada Law Book, 1998) and "Taming the Electronic Wild West" in Digital Democracy (Oxford University Press, 1998). She chairs the Media and Communications law section of the Ontario Bar Association and is a member of the Executive of the Canadian Bar Association. Julie was graduated from Queen's University Law School, The Hague Academy of International Law and the Université de Montréal.
