Session 4:

1:30-2:15 - Measuring Performance
Leonard G. Middleton, Principal Consultant, Asset Management Solutions

The development of an effective performance measurement program to gauge maintenance's effectiveness will help in understanding how well maintenance is progressing in achieving its goals. The selection and alignment of performance measures that will drive the desired behaviours throughout the organization are essential in order to support the overall organizational strategy and objectives. This presentation will examine strategies and guidelines for establishing performance measures for results-oriented maintenance in order to achieve effective accountability.

· The relationship between maintenance and overall expenditure and how maintenance performance factors ultimately impact business success
· Developing metrics to evaluate capability and repeatability
· Using performance measurements to develop an effective proactive maintenance system
· The importance of lagging versus leading indicators
· Pitfalls to avoid in launching your own maintenance performance system

2:15-3:00 - Performance Management
Michel Theriault, Strategic Advisor, Facility, Property and Asset Management Consulting

To achieve sustainable improvement in business requires not only better equipment and structural performance, but quality management of maintenance practices and resources as well. A system is only as good as those who use it, and like any company, quantitative and qualitative data must be compiled to keep performance at optimal levels. Often plant and maintenance problems are only addressed when they stop production, but keeping track performance is the first step in preventing a small problem from becoming a big one.

· The evaluation process
· Core questions and building a strategic database
· Leadership and team building
· Keeping a lid on costs
· Establishing short and long-term goals

3:00-3:30 NETWORKING BREAK

3:30-4:15 - Measuring to Manage
Cliff Williams, Engineering and Maintenance Manager, Kraft Canada

In today's information overloaded society, there are more measures being taken throughout all types of industry than ever before. The question we need to explore is: what do we do with the measurements? This presentation will look at common measurements used in maintenance management and examine the dangers and benefits that they provide. Are the measurements driving change in behaviour, strategy or results?

· Confirming the hierarchy of measurements within the organization
· Why we measure and how are they utilized
· What we measure and what do they drive in:
· Overall efficiencies
· Preventive and predictive maintenance
· Work orders, inventory and physical measurements

4:15-5:00 - Developing A Plan For Effective And Efficient Shutdowns
Stephen Kenny, Director of Waste Management and Decommissioning Operations, Chalk River Labs, Atomic Energy Canada

The best opportunity for many organizations to evaluate equipment and make scheduled repairs is during an annual or semi-annual shutdown. Given the critical nature of this process, maintenance departments must plan extensively in advance for this event in order to ensure a successful and efficient shutdown. This session will examine best practices for developing a shutdown strategy.

? Using a series of mini-shutdowns instead of traditional shutdowns
? Involving operations in the scheduling and implementation of a shutdown
? Creating realistic plan, schedule and management strategy
? Selecting shutdown team and responsibilities
? Managing suppliers and contractors during shutdown
? Contingencies for unexpected delays
